Despite its trade name, Bumble Bee Jasper is not a jasper — it is a banded volcanic sedimentary rock from near Mount Papandayan in West Java, Indonesia. Its coloring comes from sulfur- and arsenic-bearing minerals, including realgar and orpiment, layered with calcite and aragonite over time. Cutting a banded stone into a perfect sphere is more labor-intensive than a tumbled or faceted shape, since the cutter has to work the banding evenly in every direction rather than favoring one face. That's part of why sphere-cut specimens are popular with collectors who want to study a stone's pattern from all sides. At roughly 5-6 on the Mohs scale, it holds a smooth polish well. How to use it

A sphere is best displayed on a small ring stand so it can't roll off a shelf, letting you rotate it to see different banding as the light changes. Some people also like holding a smooth sphere in the hand briefly as a tactile object. Because it can roll, keep it on a stable, edge-free surface or in its stand when not being handled.
