Despite its trade name, Bumble Bee Jasper is not a jasper — it is a banded volcanic sedimentary rock from near Mount Papandayan in West Java, Indonesia. Its yellow and black coloring comes from sulfur- and arsenic-bearing minerals, including realgar and orpiment, layered with calcite and aragonite. Cutting a banded stone into a cube is a deliberate choice: the flat faces isolate sections of banding the way a rough or tumbled piece cannot, so each side can look like a different miniature landscape. At roughly 5-6 on the Mohs scale, the material polishes to a good shine but can still be scratched by harder stones.
