Despite its trade name, Bumble Bee Jasper is not a jasper at all — it is a banded volcanic sedimentary rock found near Mount Papandayan, a volcano in West Java, Indonesia. Its yellow and black bands come from sulfur- and arsenic-bearing minerals, including realgar and orpiment, layered with calcite and aragonite over time. "AAA" grading is a visual quality tier: pieces here are chosen for the boldest color separation and the fewest dull or muddy sections, which is why collectors reach for this grade specifically. At roughly 5-6 on the Mohs scale, it takes a polish well but can still scratch against harder stones.
