Abalone Shell
This Abalone Shell is a natural iridescent shell from a marine mollusk of the Haliotidae family, prized for its swirling blue, green, and violet mother-of-pearl interior. Each shell is unique in its color play and measures a comfortable size for holding a bundle of herbs. Sizes and patterns vary naturally.
In many Indigenous and contemporary traditions, the abalone shell is used as a natural vessel for smudging — holding a smoldering sage bundle or palo santo while it burns, catching ash and embers, and representing the water element in ceremony alongside the herb (earth), flame (fire), and smoke (air). Many people keep one as the centerpiece of their cleansing ritual.
Use it to safely hold and catch ash from smudge sticks, as a small altar dish for crystals, or simply as a beautiful natural display piece. Because abalone is a natural shell, the size, shape, and depth of iridescence vary from piece to piece — yours will be uniquely its own.
