Sardonyx Crystal: Meaning, Properties & Uses

Sardonyx Crystal: Meaning, Properties & Uses

Sardonyx is a banded agate variety where alternating layers of sard (deep red-orange chalcedony) and onyx (black, white, or gray) create bold, striped patterns. One of the oldest ornamental stones known, it has been carved into cameos and signet rings since antiquity. Sources include Brazil, India, Germany, and the United States. It is one of the traditional birthstones for August.

Sardonyx meaning and properties

In crystal tradition, sardonyx is associated with protection, strength, and stability — a grounding stone that many people keep close for a sense of steady confidence and resilience. It is linked to the root chakra. As with all crystals, these associations are part of a personal wellness practice rather than medical fact.

How to use sardonyx

  • Carry or wear it for a grounding, protective presence — see crystals for protection and grounding.
  • Give it as a meaningful August birthday gift alongside peridot.
  • Display a banded piece as a bold, patterned specimen.

Caring for your sardonyx

Sardonyx is durable, but gentle cleansing — selenite, sound, moonlight, or smudging — keeps it fresh. See our cleansing guide.
